I had the absolute pleasure of working with Albatross at Jungle Ink Tattoo on a full sleeve cover-up, themed around New Zealand wildlife and iconography. From the very first session, she created a warm and relaxing atmosphere, with chilled music and humourous conversation that immediately put me at ease. I was immensely impressed by her aesthetic sensibility and skillful composition. ABOUT THE ARTIST ~ ALBATROSS
Tatu is my Kungfu! Here's my story.
Both my parents were artists, my mother a portrait artist and my father a traditional Maori carver. Art was all around me all the time. Being of Tuhoe decent many members of my family wore full facial 'Mataora' it was pretty underground at the time as the colonial conditioning of the time was actively working (as it is today) to stamp out our culture and its arts.
Tattoo is one of the ways we communicate our lineage and historical connections to each other and align with the elements. I don't have any tattoos myself but I do carry my ancestral markings with pride and defiance.
The art of Tatau for me is a service to community and a role I inherited from my ancestors that trace back thousands of years ago on its journey to Aotearoa. It's a role I grew into and like my markings, earnt over decades. Although its roots are ancient I share my gift through its modern representation and application.
Coverup tattoos are an important part of what I do. Removing the damage and trauma caused by botched tattoos and more importantly restoring self esteem and confidence in my client. Replacing trauma of the past with a positive uplifting experience locked into place through healing ink.
Other times it's just really cool to bring a clients vision to life for them.
I don't really focus on myself as the hero in the story, for me, it's all about my client. They're the Hero it's their life, it's their journey, their story they will carry into eternity. I'm just the facilitator, the Ferry man you pay to get you from this place to the next in your life changing transformation through Tattoo.
